About us

We meet each Wednesday morning - whatever the weather - at venues across the Island,  including coast, downland, woods, schools and churchyards. Please email us for details of upcoming venues. The tasks vary with the seasons and depend on the location and habitats. We provide all hand tools and training in their use (we do not use power tools), and we stop for refreshments mid morning. Under 16s are welcome if accompanied by an adult. To view a list of the sites we have worked on since 2003 in date order, please click here

Double the motivation!
Everyone knows the importance of trying to be healthier and fitter. We also know how important the environment is. Green Gym succeeds on all these levels:

Helping to improve the environment
We work to benefit the Island's countryside, help local groups and organisations, and encourage community involvement. Our tasks include:

  • beach cleans and litter picks

  • hedge laying

  • creating and clearing ponds

  • tree planting and coppicing

  • habitat creation and management

  • creating and improving school environmental areas

  • creating and managing habitats, including work in SSSIs and helping to remove invasive non-native plants.

Boosting health, fitness and more
By involving participants of all ages and abilities in practical sessions in the fresh air, we aim to help them to:

  • increase their self esteem and confidence by learning new skills and completing tasks

  • improve health and muscle strength, increase energy levels, lose weight and get fitter

  • relieve stress and fight depression

  • learn more about conservation and the Island's countryside

  • make new friends and have fun!

How we are funded
We have always relied on help from many quarters to survive - primarily from the sites we work with (generally charitable or parish bodies), but we welcome donations from the public towards our overheads such as tools, fuel and insurance. If you would like to contribute financially or donate tools, please email
